We regret to announce that Robin Dickson died on Saturday, 13th June 2015 following a short illness. We are pleased that Robin had visits in hospital from several athletes during his last days. Robin joined Croydon Harriers in the early 1970s and represented them through to the 1990s over middle and long distances. He became first claim to Thames Hare & Hounds in 1997 and represented them in the Surrey Road Relays and the Surrey Masters Cross-Country Championships. Following his competitive career he became a succesful coach and also took on the role of Team Manager for the Surrey Senior Women's Cross-Country team. Robin was a quiet and private man who let his deeds speak for themselves.
Surrey athletics guru Pete Mulholland is the recipient of an award in the Queen's Birthday honours announced today (June 13th). Pete has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) "for services to athletics in Wimbledon". The award follows his winning the England Athletics London Region Volunteer of the Year and Active Wandsworth Outstanding Services to Sport and Physical Activity awards in 2014.
Pete has been a lifelong member of Hercules Wimbledon and 2014 marked 50 years as its cross country secretary and half-a-century's involvement with athletics. Despite suffering from TB as a youngster, he took up running, was a member of Hercules Wimbledon's winning Surrey cross country team in the 1960's and has completed five marathons.
But, it's as a volunteer that he has excelled. He has taken on the job of Surrey statistician spending hours each day on his computer ensuring the county rankings are kept up to date. He also produces a weekly club newsletter with results and other information which he emails out to members all over the world. At weekends he helps out at the Wimbledon Common parkrun every Saturday morning, before going off to help out at an afternoon athletics event.
On Sunday mornings, Pete assists with track training sessions. He also helps out at Tuesday and Thursday training nights and facilitates Wednesday night road running sessions.
"Pete is an inspirational volunteer at Hercules Wimbledon and elsewhere"", says Hercules Wimbledon's secretary Sheila White. "He gives freely of his time and experience to assist in a variety of ways and is a superb model for others to follow. He spends hours dedicated to our sport and few can match the hours and contribution he makes and has done so for half-a-century." Wimbledon Guardian feature.
