(61) CLIVE THOMAS 1947 - 2014
Clive Thomas en route to winning Surrey 1500m title at Motspur Park in 1975.

We regret to report the death of Clive Thomas on 22nd September 2014. Clive was a first-claim member of Thames Valley Harriers who he represented in Surrey Championships over 800m/1500m on the track and a second-claim member of Croydon Harriers who he represented in the cross-country championships during the 1970s and 1980s. He represented Surrey at 3000m Steeplechase in the 1975 CAU Inter-Counties and was county 1500m champion in 1974, 1975 & 1976. He won the AAA Indoor 1500m title in 1974. His best performances include 1:51.3 for 800m, 3:43.6 for 1500m, 4:01.0 for the Mile, 13:42.73 for 5000m and 8:37.8 for 3000m steeplechase. He competed in the first London Marathon where his time was 2:29:58.

Clive was born in Wales and won the Welsh 1500m title in 1973. Whilst he was a teacher at Stockwell Manor School he discovered a rare talent in Wayne Tarquini who, as a member of Herne Hill Harriers, won the AAA Youth 800 metres in 1973. Both athletes were coached by Frank Horwill. Clive is remembered by the Hercules Wimbledon middle-distance runners as he used to train from Lauriston on Sunday mornings. Later, Clive and his wife Angela moved to Somerset when he took up a teaching post at Millfield School. He became a well-respected coach at Wells City Harriers.
