PEGGY BURCHELL 1923 - 2021
It is with sadness that we report the death on New Years Day of Peggy Burchell a Life Member of the County Association. Peggy was for many years the person who issued the competitors numbers to the male athletes at the County Track & Field Championships. She stopped doing this when she became unsteady on her feet and was concerned that she would be a liability. On being made a Patron of the County and subsequently a Life Member she was entitled to attend County Committee meetings. When she started to attend these meetings she achieved a rare distinction in that she was the third generation of her family to be a member of the Surrey committee - her father, W H Child, represented Mitcham AC in the 1920s; her son Keith has been a committe member since the 1970s and she joined in the 1990s. Peggy gave tremendous service to Croydon Harriers and was their treasurer for many years and was a leading fundraiser for the project that saw the club build its own headquarters at Croydon Sports Arena
IDRIS OJURIYE 1984 - 2021
Herne Hill Harriers are saddened and shocked to advise that Idris Ojuriye, their popular and talented sprinter, sadly passed away suddenly on Monday 4th January. Idris was an valuable member of their BAL national league team for over fifteen years competing over 100m and 200m and sprint relays and was a regular competitor in indoor and outdoor championships ranging from Surrey to National champs. He represented Surrey on a number of occasions including competing at the Inter Counties championships and won medals at the Surrey outdoor and indoor championships. Idris was a popular, inspiring competitor and team member who was heavily involved in coaching in schools and local South London tracks where he inspired many youngsters to start athletics.
Bill Nankeville died on 8th January 2021 aged 95. Bill, a member of Walton AC, was one of the leading middle-distance runners in Britain in the 10 years following the Second World War. He was 6th in the 1500m Final at the 1948 Olympics and was a semi-finalist four years later at Helsinki. In 1950 he set a British record when finishing 3rd in the 1500m Final at the European Championships in Brussels. From 1947 - 1953 he was a medallist every year in the Mile at the AAA Championships, finishing first on 4 occasions. After retiring from competition he maintained his links with Walton AC and regularly attended club functions until recently.
UKA CONSULTATION ON DISTANCES FOR MEN AND WOMEN IN CROSS COUNTRY RACES
UKA is proposing that Men and Women should run the same distance in cross country races. A consultation is currently open. This should have gone to clubs, associations, officials and athletes with an interest in Cross Country running but the circulation seems to be patchy. This is an important question. It will affect the future structure of cross country leagues and championship races. If you are interested in cross country you should make your opinion count by responding to the survey. If UKA has not sent this to you personally you should be able to get a copy from another member of your club, maybe the club Secretary. If necessary the County Officials Secretary can forward it to you – contact email@example.com. The consultation closes on 29 January so you should act quickly.

WEBSITE CHANGES MARCH 2021
There have been some changes to the website. In particular some of the menu buttons at the top have moved. All the buttons relating to competition entries and results are now in the second row. Race Walking results are now split between those on the road and those held on the track with the former accessible from the "Road Walking" button and the latter accessible from the "Track & Field" button.
The results database has been enhanced - previously it was primarily track & field but now road and cross-country events have a similar focus. This has meant that the athlete profiles have been expanded and now include links to the events where performances were achieved. All-time rankings now include the Under-23 age group.
Significant changes have also been made to the structure of the historical "News Headlines" so that for recent years it provides an account for all the Surrey related activities for a year in chronological order. This information is complete for recent years and is being progressively updated for earlier years as far back as 1920 when the AAA started to regularise County athletics.

REQUESTS FOR PAYMENT FROM SURREY ATHLETICS OFFICIALS - We have noticed recent requests for payment of monies in emails which appear to have been sent by an SCAA official. These are not genuine and should be ignored and certainly not replied to. It is not the practice of SCAA officials to request payment from individuals using a Surrey Athletics email address. The Surrey Athletics email addresses have been created to allow the athletics community to communicate with appropriate SCAA officials and are published on our website to facilitate this. Unfortunately, we are not able to stop unauthorised people sending emails that give the impression that they have been sent from an SCAA official. In general, scepticism is a good reaction to any such requests for money.NATIONAL UNION OF TRACK STATISICIANS (NUTS) - NUTS is due to open its athletics archive/museum later this year at Coombe Wood School, Melville Avenue, Croydon CR2 7NY. They are on the lookout for donations and or loans of the following:-
(1) Books; (2) Programmes; (3) Photos; (4) Trophies; (5) Medals; (6) Club Badges & Vests (including clubs that no longer exist); (7) Old or Olympic kit; (8) Unwanted stopwatches (Do not have to work); (9) Documents; (10) Old running shoes, any pre-war would be wonderful. especially Laws, Fosters etc; (11) Other relevant items suitable for display or reference. Should you have any of the above that you would like them to consider, please contact Mike Fleet 020 8647 1341 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. SURREY COUNTY ATHLETICS HISTORICAL INFORMATION - CAN YOU HELP? - Keith Burchell currently holds the archives for the Surrey County AAA and Surrey County WAAA. These are far from being complete. If you have any past information such as programmes, committee minutes, championship results etc that you are thinking of disposing then please contact Keith Burchell. In particular, sets of County Championship results prior to 1980 are sought.
RESPECT TO OUR TEAM MANAGERS
Surrey County Athletic Association does not accept or condone the use of offensive behaviour towards or abuse or bullying of team managers under any circumstances. Team managers are all volunteers and make their decisions on the basis of information available to them. While not everyone is likely to agree with all of their decisions they must respect them and all the hours of work and agonising that go into the difficult task these team managers carry out in the interests of encouraging athletics in the county.
CARDIAC RISK IN THE YOUNG
England Athletics is publicising this charity.
CRY is a charity that was established to raise awareness of conditions that can lead to the sudden cardiac death of young people. They operate a screening programme at a number of clinics around the UK and support this with mobile units that travel to other locations.
Full information about CRY and their services can be found on their website at www.c-r-y.org.uk. Young people between the age of 14 and 35 who would like to have cardiac testing can go to www.testmyheart.org.
You can also see www.uka.org.uk/governance/health-safety/cardiac-screening-for-athletes/ for information on work being done by UKA in this area.
Following the death of a young member of Croydon Harriers, Mike Fleet has been promoting this charity for several years and anyone wishing to have copies of his photographs has been asked to make a donation to CRY. Further, he has been exchanging for donations bookmarks signed by famous athletes to raise funds for this charity. We thank those of you who have shown your support in the past.
