(22) SURREY COUNTY TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS, KINGSMEADOW, 11TH/2TH MAY 2024
With temperatures in the mid-20s and no rain the conditions were excellent for the athletes wanting to set PBs and SBs. If you look through the RESULTS you will find 15 Championship Best Performances and a County record (see item below).
During the meeting we had a minutes applause in memory of Nick Phipps who died recently. We were also saddened to hear that Caspian Holmes (Herne Hill Harriers) was involved in a car accident on his way to contest the final of the Under-15 Boys 1500m. We hope that he makes a full recovery shortly and is able to resume a talented career.
Nick Phipps died on 24th April 2024 aged 72. Nick was well known to Surrey athletes having competed in Surrey Combined Events Championships from 1967 through to 2010. He subsequently became an accomplished coach to many combined eventers. He had a great passion for the Pole Vault and his connection with the event continues through the achievements of his son Jack who has been one of the leading British vaulters since 2008.
In addition to his Track & Field accomplishments he was very successful at Bobsleigh. He represented Great Britain for more than a decade, making his first Olympic appearance in Lake Placid in 1980, before travelling to, but not competing in, Calgary in 1988 and retiring after his third Games in Albertville in 1992. He was a 2-man and 4-man pilot and finished 15th in the 4-man event in Placid and 13th in both the 2 and 4-man disciplines in Albertville.
